Biff, Bash, Kapow - unarmed for beginners
The art of safe but realistic unarmed violence for the stage, including punching, kicking, headbutting, strangling, hairpulling, and breaking the odd bone.
Swashing and Buckling - swords for beginners,
Swordplay by numbers for complete novices. The participants learn the theory of safe stage swordfights by gradually building a fight. This workshop also has the 3 bonus Shakespeare flavours; Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth. This workshop also works as an excellent introduction to Shakespeare for key stage 3/4.
Includes weapon hire.
Rough &
Tumble - physical truth in stage violence

Much stage combat is based on artifice, requiring the actor to present a purely technical choreography as if it was spontaneous and violent but actors are usually trained to use their creativity as artists. Stage fights often deny them direct physical input. Is it possible to create a fight which serves the dramatic need for spontaneity and tension, and the actor’s need for safety? Is it possible to find a physical truth to replace the artifice of ‘traditional’ stage fights?
In this workshop students will explore notions of synergy and contact improvisation within the context of stage combat. Excellent for domestic violence, playground rumpuses, and other 'unstructured' combat.
( available for short & half day sessions)
Everyday objects in combat
Standard lamp versus pliers? shopping trolley versus wooden spoon? Anything can be a weapon. This session explores the violent potential of less than obvious props.
