Review from Livewire’s Iliad - Edinburgh
fringe 2007
‘swordplay … has a ferocity and skill in
the choreography that puts Chanbara to shame.’
Realistic theatrical violence
is a combination of acting and skillful illusion, whether it is flamboyant
swashbuckling swordplay, slapstick, punchup or domestic violence.
For the first time fringe companies and audiences have the chance to learn
the tricks of the trade and practice the skills of stage combat at the Fringe.
With a series of alternating, fully participatory, swordplay and unarmed workshops
Ian is offering to teach the swashbuckling, the punching and kicking violence
so vital to much modern drama
Ian has directed the fights or several very well received Fringe plays, Including Livewire’s acclaimed Iliad – And this year ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’ (Venue 45). Off the Fringe he regularly works at Hull Truck, and teaches theatrical violence at major UK drama schools.
